“Piazza Barche” competition

The project

The requalification of Piazza Barche — XXVII Ottobre in Mestre, taken not as a single square but as a piece of a wider urban system.

The design moves from a few objectives held together: encouraging cycling, walking and public transport, strengthening and reorienting business activity, upgrading the pedestrian spaces, improving the city’s relationship with the water, enhancing the system of green spaces.

To these are added elements with a strong social character — multimedia centres, services, recreational spaces — because a square with no reason to stay remains a thoroughfare.

The main gesture is the recovery of the old bed of the Canal Salso, turned into a pedestrian route: not a line but a place, onto which several urban functions are grafted.
